A good squishy should last years, not weeks — but only if it’s cared for properly. Squishies are more delicate than they look, and a few small habits make a big difference in how long that satisfying slow-rise squeeze sticks around.
Keep Them Out of Direct Sunlight
This is the number one cause of squishy damage. Prolonged sun exposure yellows the foam, fades the paint, and can actually change the texture of the foam over time, making it feel stiffer or less springy. Keep squishies on a shelf or display case away from direct windows, especially in warmer months.
Avoid Extreme Heat
Leaving a squishy in a hot car, near a radiator, or anywhere the temperature climbs is one of the fastest ways to damage the foam permanently. Heat can cause the foam to melt slightly, warp, or lose its slow-rise bounce entirely. Room temperature storage is best.
Clean Gently, Not Aggressively
Dust and light dirt are normal with regular handling. To clean:
• Use a barely damp cloth and gently wipe the surface
• Avoid soaking the squish in water — foam absorbs water and can take a long time to dry out, which may affect the texture
• Skip harsh soaps or cleaning chemicals, which can break down the foam or affect the paint/scent
Give Them a Rest
If you use a squish daily, its foam is doing a lot of work. Rotating between a few squishies (rather than squeezing just one constantly) gives the foam time to fully recover its shape between uses, which helps it maintain that slow-rise quality for longer.
Store Collection Pieces Properly
For squishies you’re keeping as collectibles rather than everyday fidgets:
• A clear display case or shelf keeps them dust-free and visible without needing frequent handling
• Avoid stacking squishies directly on top of each other for long periods, which can cause permanent indentations
• Keep original packaging if you plan to resell or trade limited edition pieces later — collectors often value this
Signs It’s Time to Retire a Squishy
Even with good care, squishies don’t last forever. It might be time to retire one if:
• It no longer returns to its original shape after squeezing
• The material feels crumbly or is visibly tearing at the seams
• The scent (if originally scented) has turned unpleasant rather than faded
